True Life Story:

Melanie wanted to apply early decision to a liberal arts college with astronomy as her intended major. She enrolled in a second year of physics, but her high school did not offer astronomy courses. It was late spring junior year. Was it too late to bolster her credibility as an astronomy applicant?

Melanie joined two local astronomy clubs I told her about. She attended meetings and events junior summer and fall of senior year. She volunteered at an observatory, where they trained her to use the telescope, (which she loved!) and then she assisted the public with observations on Saturday nights. I also located an amateur astronomer who was glad to meet and talk with her. At the same time Melanie was enhancing her resume, she was learning, meeting others who shared her interest, and having fun.

When it came time to describe meaningful activities on the Common Application, she was able to write convincingly about her lifelong love for French horn, and about her new passion for astronomy.

How other clients became stronger candidates.

  • Interested in international relations, one student joined the World Affairs Council.

  • I suggested a creative writer attend monthly First Friday Poetry readings at a community writing center, and start a small literary publication or club at school.

  • A budding psychologist started subscribing to and reading Psychology Today.

  • I linked a student interested in medicine to a health clinic for the homeless, where she was trained as a volunteer to do patient intake and set up electronic medical records.

It is not too late to build your resume!
