Get acquainted with the process and timeline for college search and application. Discussion will cover:

  • How to find schools you like

  • Ways to become a stronger candidate

  • Admissions plans (early, rolling, regular)

  • Which standardized tests to take and how many times (SAT, SATII, ACT, AP, IB)

  • Application forms and requirements (The Common, Texas Common, individual schools)

  • Tips to strengthen essays, resumes and interviews

  • Letters of recommendation

  • Why and when to schedule campus visits

  • What to focus on each year of high school

Colleges are bombarding us with brochures. How different are the schools really? How do I decide what is right for me? Session topics will include:

  • A framework to match schools to what is important to you

  • Expanding your comfort zone

  • Common concerns (public or private? close or far? cost?)

  • Is it important to know what career you want when you pick a college?

  • Common myths and assumptions

  •  How to use and not use guidebooks and rankings

  • Where can I get in?

  • What do admissions officers look at?

Parents often worry more about getting into college than their children. They want to know, “Is my child doing enough?” “Should I push or back off?” This workshop explores why the college process gets so tense, and the constructive role a parent can play.

  • What message do your words convey to your child?

  • How can a parent help?

Better Essays/Better Resumes

Students and Parents

Monday, October 15, 7-9:00pm

 

Reduce the agony. You do not have to climb Everest or find a cure for AIDS to write a compelling essay. In this session we look at “before” and “after” drafts of actual college application essays and resumes, and you learn to:

  • Decide what to write about

  • Capture your reader’s interest

  • Avoid common stylistic “mistakes”

  • Edit and improve your essay drafts

  • Transform a list of activities into an effective resume

Where Should I Apply?

Students Only

Mondays, October 22 & November 5, 7- 9:30pm

 

This 5- hour, 2 evening session provides individualized college counseling in a small group setting. College Mentor Carol Safran helps each participant to identify interests, accomplishments, aspirations and preferences and to examine a range of suitable personal options. Attendance is capped at 6. You will leave equipped with the following:

  • A personal binder with information compiled on 6-10 college choices that meet your parameters and on courses of study that match your interests.

  • An understanding of how to pick schools that are “right” for you.

  • Tools to devise a personal strategy of how many colleges to apply to.

  • An overview of the application process and how to effectively complete it.

  • Skills to assist you in doing further research about colleges on your own.

$295 member/$345 public
